An American Viticultural Area is a designated wine grape-growing region in the United States distinguishable by geographic features, with boundaries defined by the United States Department of the Treasury Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). The TTB defines AVAs at the request of wineries and other petitioners. There were 190 AVAs as of May, 2008. Prior to the installation of the AVA system, wine appellations of origin in the United States were designated based on state or county boundaries. All of these appellations were grandfathered into federal law and may appear on wine labels as designated places of origin, but these appellations are distinct from AVAs.

Missouri Wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of Missouri. European immigrants, especially from German states in the early to mid-1800s, founded the wine industry in Missouri. Later Italian immigrants also entered wine production. In the mid-1880s, more wine was produced by volume in Missouri than in any other state. Before Prohibition, Missouri was the second-largest wine-producing state.

Missouri had the first area recognized as a federally designated American Viticultural Area with the Augusta AVA on June 20, 1980. There are now four AVAs in Missouri.

The Norton was introduced by Dr. Daniel Norborne Norton of Richmond, Virginia who selected it from among what he believed were seedlings of a long forgotten grape variety called Bland, though there is some doubt as to whether it was the actual source of the seed which yielded Norton. The male parent, presumably, was a wild vine of Vitis aestivalis.

Western Iowa Wine Trail 2nd Annual "Spring Fling!" PDF Print E-mail

On May 3rd and 4th, 2008 the Western Iowa Wine Trail will present it's 2nd Annual "Spring Fling" from 10:00am until 6:00pm each day. 

Tickets are $20 per person and include samples of each winery's newly released wines paired with cheses, breads and dipping oils.

At the first stop participants receive a commemorative Western Iowa Wine Trail wine glass that is to be used at each of the wineries visited.
